The Museum of the Street

– February 1 2026

Esbjerg Art Museum has a longstanding tradition for extramural exhibitions. We are dedicated in our efforts to reach people where they go about their lives, we strive to keep the collection relevant and make the art experience an important part of the city’s life. Instead, we now, in a manner of speaking, turn everything upside down, because this time we are not moving outside – rather we bring the street into the museum.

Using the headline The Museum of the Street, street artist Peter Birk has recreated the exhibition hall as a unified manifestation, inspired directly by works from the museum collection. The works used all belong to the concrete-abstract tradition of the 20th century. This particular type of art focuses on line, surface, form, and colour, all of which were considered to be of universal validity and thus constituted a kind of democratic potential.

There are obvious overlaps between this kind of art perception and the more vernacular, visually powerful, street art. With his total work of art, Birk demonstrates how on the one hand museum art is capable of developing street art, while street art strategies on the other hand can make the museum’s works grow in order to open to the audience anew.

The Museum of the Street is Peter Birk’s first solo exhibition at an art museum.
