ONE More - In Memoriam: Sol LeWitt
Esbjerg Art Museum,  31 Maj - 31 August  2008,   curator: Dove Bradshaw

What does the expression ‘less is more’ mean?

Take a thorough look at the exhibition. What is the relationship be-tween ‘work’ and ‘idea’?

Can a minimalistic, conceptual work be perceived in the same way as for example a landscape painting?

What makes a work become art? - is it the idea behind it or the ac-tual, aesthetic appearance?

What gives a piece of art its meaning? - does the meaning originate in the artist? - is it imbedded within the work? - or are you as a spectator a co-creator of the meaning?

The exhibition ONE More pays tribute to one of the great american artists from the 20th century, the conceptualist and minimalist Sol LeWitt, who died in 2007. ONE More is curated by the artist Dove Bradshaw and due to her engagement in the project, we are able to present works by a number of LeWitt’s close friends and colleagues - american artists with an icon status.
Besides works by Sol LeWitt himself the exhibition presents pieces by Lawrence Anastasi, William Anastasi, Carl André, Robert Barry, Dove Bradshaw, Marcia Hafif, Jene Highstein, Melissa Kretschmer, Richard Nonas, Janet Passehl, Cordy Ryman, Robert Ryman and Merill Wagner - all artists rooted in the international conceptual art scene of the 1960s and 70s.

Facts:

Concept art is an art form which emerged in the 1960s. For supporters of concept art the idea about the art work is of far greater importance than the actual work. Therefor the ‘real’ art work is not the physical object created by the artist but the idea or concept behind it.

Minimal art is (also) rooted in the early 1960s. A minimalistic object mainly consists of simple, geometrical forms and grids. The minimalistic artists deny the way in which a piece of art traditionally has gained its meaning or content - in stead they are emptying the work of any inner meaning or value.
