BETWEEN REALITY AND UTOPIA
- a new perspective on Langelinie by Edvard Weie

February 2 – April 28, 2013

Opening February 1

Between Reality and Utopia is the first project of a series in which Esbjerg Art Museum, in collaboration with researchers, expounds and perspectivizes a number of main works in the collection, based on the most recent research.
In the current exhibition we focus on the important Danish modernist Edvard Weie’s På Langelinie (1923). This work is presented together with other Langelinie-works by the same artist; works that are shown together for the very first time. Weie painted Langelinie and the way modern life unfolded there repeatedly during the 1920’s. He explored the place, its potential, interpretations, colours and abstract qualities through sketches, segments, and larger compositions, all conceived in conjunction with his development of the painting as ‘language’.
Weie’s absorption with and renderings of Langelinie are twofold: On the one hand he describes through his paintings a very concrete location, Langelinie, while on the other he depicts a place which is wholly abstract. Through his works the actual location is supplied with drama and unwarranted depths, making it utopian beyond both what is private and intimate and the public, political space.
